2012

IT and Law; Law in the Digital Era

The first LRM Conference took place in 2012. It focused on IT and law and addressed the fundamental question of whether the law should be adapted to fit cyberspace. Are our traditional ways of law-making digitalization-proof? Speakers included prof. Jong Bing from Oslo University, prof. Willem Grosheide from Utrecht University, prof. Derrick de Kerckhove from Toronto University and prof Saskia Sassen from Columbia University.

2013

Law and Art; the Protection of Art and its Limits

The 2013 conference concerned Law and Art. More specifically it explored the boundaries of the protection of art, artists and cultural works, posing questions such as: to what extent must artists be protected against criminal prosecution for their artistic expressions? Speakers included prof. Vervaart from the Vrije Universiteit Amderstadm and Mrs. Evelien Campfens from Leiden University.

2014

Innovative Adjudication in Dutch Courts

The topic of the 2014 conference was Innovation Adjudication in Dutch Courts. Many innovative ideas to make the Dutch court system more efficient were discussed, in order to realize both fast and fair judicial proceedings in the Netherlands. Amongst the speakers were: prof. Maurits Barendrecht, Tilburg University; prof Allan Lind, Duke University; Mrs. Maria van de Schepop Senior Judge, Court of The Hague and Prof. Lin Adrian, University of Copenhagen.

2015

Corporate Social Engagement 

In 2015 the annual conference revolved around the topic of corporate social engagement. The Conference focused on the way companies pay attention to the social dimension of their business and the reasons why they do so. The topic was dealt with through three themes, which are: a) Corruption, b) Business & Human Rights, and, c) Social Entrepreneurship. The following speakers attended the conference: Prof. Tineke Lambooy Utrecht University & Nyenrode Business Universiteit; prof. Jan Eijsbouts, Maastricht University; Mr. Mark Hillen, Co-founder Social Enterprise NL; Mr. Gilles Goedhart, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

2016

Blending Public and Private: Privatization of Public Law and Enforcement

The 2016 conference was titled: Blending Public and Private: Privatization of Public Law and Enforcement. The conference addressed the increasing influence of deregulation and the changing role of the State, leading to the privatization of certain aspects of public regulation and enforcement of public law. But is this privatization desirable? And what are the consequences for traditional ways of regulation and enforcement? Speakers included: prof. Fabrizio Cafaggi, European University Institute; dr. Rutger Claassen, Utrecht University; prof. Anna Leander, Copenhagen Business School; prof. Marjan Peter, Maastricht University.

Law and New Risks

In order to establish what new risks are and to shed light upon it’s definitional challenges, a plenary session provided an introduction. It outlined a conceptual background on (regulating) new risks, from a technical, legal, and governance perspective. Against that background further debate took place. Amongst the speakers were: prof. Michael Faure, Maastricht University and Erasmus University; dr. Erica Brouwer, United Nations; dr. Aline Reichow, German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; dr. Boet Glandorf, Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

2018

Empathy on Trial: On the Role of Empathy In the Legal Sector

The 2018 conference took a unique law and literature approach and revolved around the question. how the field of Law and Literature regards the role and relevance of empathy in legal education and practice. Speakers included: prof. Jeanne Gakeer, Erasmus University; prof. Marco Wan, Hong Kong University; dr Ted Laros, Open University; dr. Emma Jones, Open University.

The Climate of Law: Our Changing World Changing our Laws

The topic of the 2019 conference was the law in relation to climate change. The Conference explored the environmental pressures placed on modern societies, and measured how these pressures will influence potential legal reactions and evolutions in private, public and international law in a more volatile future. The following speakers shared their insights: Dr. Elbert de Jong, Utrecht University; Mr. Jan van de Venis. JustLaw; Mr. Reinhold Gallmetzer, Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC; Dr. Jos Philips Utrecht University.

2021

Law & Power

Following the cancellation of the 2020 conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 edition of the conference turned to the relationship between law and power in the rise of new technologies, and changing dynamics between public and private power. Speakers included: prof. Hilary Charlesworth, prof. Sasha Prechal, judge Olimpia Barańska-Małuszek, Dr. Ioannis Kampourakis, Dr. Dimitri van den Meerssche, Dr. Rogier de Vrey and Dr. Thibault Schrepel.

2022

Law and Social Change in Dialogue

The 2022 edition of the conference took a view at how law and social change are inseparably tangled and how when new laws are enacted, we might see changes in our own individual behaviour, or in the way our governments function. In parallel, social change can inspire shifts and transformations in the law; new developments often mean new legislation and additional regulation. In cases where law prevents social change, we can mobilise the law and demand change by turning to activism and litigation. Speakers included: prof. Karin Arts, prof. Johanna Kusiak, prof. Barbara Oomen, prof. Ingrid Leijten, prof. Siddarth Peter de Souza, prof. Klaas Eller, retired Judge Frans Langemijer and PILP member Rosa Beets.

Responsibility in Europe: Past, Present, and Future

In the 2023 edition of the LRM conference, we explored the legal dimensions of responsibility for the past, the present, and future. The notion of responsibility has an extensive legal dimension, one which is not in the least limited to private law classrooms. Who to hold responsible, for what and how, are questions which transcend the philosophical, political and legal disciplines. Questions of blame and guilt constantly resurface as society demands attention for old and ongoing harms, as new harms are being caused, and as future harm is approaching. Democracy under the Spotlight

The 2024 LRM conference committee hosted a day of thought-provoking discussions dedicated to exploring contemporary democracy. Attendees enjoyed presentations and seminars hosted by leading experts with legal and interdisciplinary backgrounds.
